Jim was a talented and caring physician, celebrated knifemaker, journeyman ironworker, avid collector, and beloved father with a passion for creating and a devotion to excellence. His family, friends, and colleagues highly respected him for a life defined by deep intelligence, integrity, compassion, and a tireless work ethic. He dedicated the last decades of his life to making beautiful knives that were replicas of those made by William Scagel. In 2010, Jim published a book on the life of William Scagel and the many objects he created called Scagel Handmade.
The American Bladesmith Society awarded Jim several awards, and created a new award called the Dr. Jim Lucie Award that is given annually to those who have "distinguished themselves in preserving the lore of the forged blade.”
Authored by Jim's youngest daughter, this poignant book is a tribute to her father’s enduring legacy. In addition to the photographs, it includes numerous quotes from Jim and three exhibits Jim wrote himself, setting forth how to create Scagel-replica knives.
This classic work includes, in color, the largest number of Jim’s knives ever assembled in one place. It is a beautiful testament and a collector’s item with limited copies available. Autographed by the author.
